This is probably the question I get asked most by new clients.
They come in having only ever waxed their brows, or only ever threaded, and they want to know if they should switch. The honest answer is: it depends on your skin. But let me explain the actual difference so you can decide for yourself.
Threading uses a thin cotton thread twisted into a loop. The thread rolls across the skin and catches hair right at the follicle, pulling several hairs out in one clean line.
The biggest advantage is that the thread only touches the hair, not your skin. No product goes on your face. That matters a lot if your skin is sensitive or reactive, or if you're using retinol or other active skincare, since those make skin more prone to irritation from wax.
Threading also gives sharper, cleaner lines. For eyebrows specifically, I'd say threading wins on precision most of the time. A good threader can follow your natural brow shape closely and pick off single stray hairs that wax just can't catch.
Waxing is faster, plain and simple. For bigger areas like the upper lip, chin, or full face, wax gets the job done quicker than threading hair by hair.
It's also a better fit if you have a lot of fine, fuzzy hair rather than coarse hair, since wax grabs everything in one pass.
For eyebrows: threading. For upper lip and chin: either works, but I usually suggest wax if you're short on time.
If you've never tried threading before, come in and we'll talk through your skin and hair type first. I'll tell you straight up which one I'd recommend for you — not just upsell whatever's more expensive.
